Akenfield - a local production by local people
David Pollard, playwright
The classic book that is ‘Akenfield’ has been newly adapted for the stage and is being performed in community venues throughout Suffolk in September and October.
Telling the story of ordinary people living in rural England during the period 1880-1966, the book was written by the much-loved writer, Ronald Blythe. It became a film in 1974, created by director Peter Hall.
The play of ‘Akenfield’ has been conceived by the actor and director, Jenny Hall (daughter of Peter Hall) and this is very much a passion project, celebrating the book, the film, the people then and now and Ronald Blythe himself.
With a script written by Jenny’s husband, Glenn Wilhide (producer of TV’s The Royle Family), the play melds time periods and presents Ronald Blythe as a character in his own right.
Jenny has drawn a fascinating creative team, all with links to Suffolk - and even to Ronnie himself. Finn Collinson, composing the music for the play, remembers that his grandparents were neighbours of Ronnie. Young Suffolk talent, Constance Mackenzie (who has worked on The Mirror and the Light and Wonder Woman!) is designing the costumes. And acclaimed sculptor Laurence Edward is designing the set.
The cast is drawn from local people, through open auditions, just as in the original film where Peter Hall refused to use professional actors.
It is hoped that early next year the production will move to London and beyond.
