BSEODS to perform comedy classic at Theatre Royal this September

The countdown has begun as Bury St Edmunds Operatic and Dramatic Society gets ready to perform ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ at Theatre Royal this September.

Based on series one and two of the beloved BBC TV series, this stage adaption by Ian Gower & Paul Carpenter includes all your favourite characters and focuses on Geraldine’s arrival in Dibley and the love story of Hugo and Alice, culminating with their wedding.

If you don’t know the story…

When Geraldine Granger arrives as the new Vicar in the village of Dibley, her parishioners are confronted with a change that they hadn’t anticipated - a very new person with very new ideas! Geraldine manages to win over Owen, Jim, Mrs Cropley and Frank, but leader of the Parish Council David Horton is a much tougher nut to crack. With the support of his son Hugo and Hugo’s ditsy love interest Alice, Geraldine happily triumphs. But what can go wrong along the way? Heavens!

It’s full of iconic lines and jokes - a must-see for fans or great introduction to the classic comedy for newcomers.

Following on from his NODA-award-winning BSEODS directorial debut of Allo Allo 2 in 2024, director Tom Hitchcock is once again enjoying immersing himself in an adaption of a well-known TV series.

Alongside casting actors who look as close to the original cast as possible, he has been strongly focusing on the accents and getting the cast’s movements to be recognisably that of their character. Part of his vision has been to include an ensemble choir to add depth by bringing the iconic music of the TV series to life under the excellent tutelage of Musical Director Cian Harriss.
