Nick Cope

Review by Georgina Clark.

Today’s review was a special occasion – my daughters first ever visit to the theatre! And we had the pleasure of watching CBeebies one and only Nick Cope.

We arrived to find a cozy set and she was basically vibrating with excitement! The back of the stage had a screen which was used throughout to play the cartoon videos that accompany each song (as seen on the Nick Cope Popcast!) which made for fun, colourful viewing and helped keep the attention of little minds.

And for Nick’s opening scene, he talked about the nerves on stage and jokes about ways to settle them. This was a small but clever way to begin for a crowd full of young children who likely were (just like my daughter) experiencing a little anxiousness about the big, loud theatre.

The show then followed him as he played his greatest hits, new songs and even a classic hit remixed, and I was pleasantly surprised by how great his vocals really are. Between songs were funny little talks and lots of encouragement for audience participation, from pantomime style shouting to getting the kids to clap and sing – it really felt the audience was part of the show.

Importantly, he keeps a constant, quite fast pace which means the young audience are never kept waiting for the next part.

The sound and lighting team deserve a huge credit as the volume of sound could not have been more perfect for the age of audience: loud enough to feel that buzz from live music but not overwhelming or frightening for those sensitive ears. The lighting was also complementary of what was happening on stage without being too much of a shock on the senses.

The whole production had truly thought of every way to make it appeal to the aimed audience.

But don’t worry grown-ups, there was plenty of clean, adult humour to be enjoyed and let’s be honest, if your child is a Nick Cope fan you will most definitely be singing along too (my personal favourite is ‘Hugh the Hedgehog’).

Others songs to be enjoy include: ‘Lizard on a Rock’, ‘Baby’s Done a Poo’, Another Day of Me and so much more!

The best moment for me: when he asked them to hold up phone torches and wave them – just like seeing your favourite rockstar!

But, do my opinions really matter? Let’s hear from my fabulous assistant (aged three) as to what she thinks:

Q: Who’s Nick Cope?

Beatrice: He’s on our tele! He does the Nick Cope Popcast. It’s the BEST TV show and we got tickets to see him. He sings songs and he has a dog, Norman. I’ve never been to the theatre before.

Q: What was your favourite song?

Beatrice: I’m a little lizard standing on a rock … he wore an outfit and it was SO funny.

Q: What part did you like best?

Beatrice: Singing and clapping. I was really REALLY loud.

Q: Do you think other children should go and watch the show?

Beatrice: Yeah, I think my best friends would like to go. We should take them.

To conclude, I have nothing negative to say – there was the odd issue with his microphone but hey, that’s live music!

It was a magical memory made with my daughter – one that I will never forget.

Get tickets, do something new together and let them fall in love with music and theatre.

Nick Cope was at The Apex, Bury St Edmunds on 11 October 2026.
