Rapunzel

There are a few things that always get me in the Christmas spirit: Christmas lights, that classic coke advert and, of course, a pantomime.
Now, despite being a theatre fanatic who grew up in the Bury area, I have never been to Theatre Royal let alone their pantomime, so I went with no prior expectations but a lot of excitement - I was NOT disappointed!
This classic panto tells the story of 'Rapunzel, with all the expected characters: a princess, a love interest, a villain (who you’ll just love to hate) and a hilarious dame! A variety of songs are also featured, from theatrical classics like ‘Defying Gravity’, to Christmas songs like ’12 days of Christmas’ and even some well-loved hits such as ‘Sweet Child of Mine’. Meanwhile, the story has been cleverly adapted to be based in Suffolk with many regional references. And it was these local references alone that gave any hint that I was in a small Bury St Edmunds theatre, because the show was of such quality that I felt like I was seeing a big London production!
Yes, the show did have a technical issue just after the opening scene and they had to pause for a few minutes, but opening nights are bound to have a glitch here and there - that comes with the beauty of live theatre - and after the issue was quickly rectified, the actors returned to the stage unfazed.

The staging and costumes are all vibrant and fun - traditional pantomime vibes - being both simple and effective with perfect transitions which means the pace is fast enough to keep you engaged and the energy level high, but not so fast that it felt rushed or chaotic.
To pick a stand out performance is pretty much an impossible task. Lizzie Buckingham who plays Jinx manages to never break character despite not having dialogue. Ruby Ablett’s portrayal of Lassie the Dog is high energy and fun - how she manages to keep up her energy and have great vocal control with such an active role I do not know! The dame Rusty McBusty, played by Alasdair Buchan, had my cheeks hurting from the huge grin that was put on my face. And all the wonderful children who took part had a contagious amount of happiness on stage.
Honestly, I could go on and on but the final ‘actor’ comment I shall make is that Ewan Grant who plays loveable shepherd, Sammy, had the most fantastic stage presence and real class. A true talent and someone I hope to see on stage again in future.
All the actors looked to be having the time of their lives on stage and some phenomenal voices were showcased.
Credit to the writer of this panto - Chris Hannon. The show was family friendly but did not compromise on quality. Truly one for all ages to enjoy.
I doubt even Scrooge himself could watch this show and not leave full of joy.
I really could just waffle on forever…
So, should you and your family go and see Rapunzel? Oh yes, you should!
Rapunzel is at Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds until 18 January 2026.
