Chilling one-woman show heads to Sudbury
This October at The Quay Theatre in Sudbury, Claire Louise Amias presents her chilling one-woman show - ‘Haunted Shadows: The Gothic Tales of Edith Nesbit’.
Currently on tour, the production provides a gripping insight into the darker side of the legendary writer. Because while she may be best known as the creator of ‘The Railway Children’, Edith Nesbit was also an expert at chilling the spine and curdling the blood.
Performing three of her Gothic tales on stage - and winner of the Hamilton Deane Award (presented annually by The Dracula Society for outstanding contributions to the Gothic horror or supernatural genres) - is Claire Louise Amias, who relates each dark story while recalling her own childhood terrors.
The three ghostly tales…
For ‘In The Shadow’, a repressed housekeeper encounters an abominable entity, while in ‘The Pavilion’ the shade of a long-dead necromancer envelops a social gathering. Finally, a deranged young woman harbours a deadly secret in a rediscovered story called ‘A Strange Experience’.

Interestingly, the actor and writer Mark Gatiss has also enjoyed seeing ‘Haunted Shadows’ and had this to say about it: “E. Nesbit was far more than just the creator of ‘The Railway Children’. Also part of the production is costume designer Anna Sorensen Sargent, who lives in Sudbury, while renowned horror expert Jonathan Rigby directs.
