Club inspires solo audience members to enjoy latest shows

‘Appraisal’ at Theatre Royal in May

Do you love theatre but have no-one to go with? Theatre Royal’s Summer 2025 Theatre Club could be the answer.

Inspired by the concept of a book club, the scheme was designed to encourage audience members to feel empowered and comfortable visiting the theatre on their own, while also inviting theatre goers to delve deeper into the world of performance. Running since January 2024, the initiative offers a relaxed and welcoming approach to enjoying theatre, combining the enjoyment of live performances with thoughtful discussion and socialising.

How it works:

  • Pre-show gathering - Theatre Club members are invited to meet at a designated table in the Greene Room Bar where extra literature about the show, playwright and cast will be on the table ahead of the performance.

  • Interval engagement - during the interval, members can choose to reconvene at the Theatre Club table to share thoughts and reflections on the first half of the show.

  • Post-show discussion - after the performance, members are welcome to continue the conversation at The Dog and Partridge, a local pub just 300 meters from the theatre, where a reserved table will be available for members to discuss the show in a relaxed setting.

APPRAISAL

On Thursday, 8 May.

An annual work review that goes horribly wrong. Head of Department Nicky wants to get on with her job, but her boss Jo has other ideas. He has a plan and thinks she is going to like it. 5 MISTAKES THAT CHANGED HISTORY

On Friday 13 June

We all make mistakes, but rarely do they change the course of history. 5 Mistakes That Changed History is a hilarious historical storytelling show performed by historian and comedian, Paul Coulter, about five people and how their mistakes (big and small!) changed the world. Blending history, storytelling and comedy, the show has been a smash-hit, sell-out success.

A SHODDY DETECTIVE

On 25-26 June

A laugh-out-loud slapstick whodunnit featuring four actors, a dozen characters and a whole load of chaos. When a priceless painting goes missing from a private auction, Detective Stuart Pidcock is called upon to uncover the mystery. However, when he cannot solve it himself, he is forced to enlist the help of an old nemesis.
